Town Hall covered in wool with the aid of a scissor lift!

Manual handling equipment such as pallet trucks or scissor tables are most commonly used in industrial settings such as warehouses or storage facilities however some avid knitters in the town of Warwick have found a much more interesting use for materials handling equipment. The Jumper and jazz yarn bombing project stepped their efforts up a gear from last year where they covered a VW Beetle in knitted squares and have this year, with the aid of a scissor lift, covered Warwick Town Hall with knitted elements from knitted bunting to pillars covered in a knitted patchwork.

Over one hundred people contributed to producing the knitted pieces that now adorn the town hall including some local children. The organiser, Ms Devine, said that they deliberately kept the design simple so everyone could take part. Local children were responsible for producing the pompoms and tassels and a request for 20cm plain coloured squares was sent out to the groups members and residents of Warwick town and the response was overwhelming. The crocheted and knitted squares were sewn together to make large blankets which were installed using a scissor lift.

The project has been so successful and so well received that Ms Devine is hoping to yarn bomb the town hall again next year for the 2012 Jumpers and Jazz festival. She stated that “we thought it would be nice to keep it for the town hall and make it a tradition... It’s nice to have those traditions people can come back and see time and time again.”

Apparently the project has cause so much interest that people are already enquiring as to what will happen next year. Ms Devine said “We have also had people asking what the theme will be, we haven’t decided yet but it’s something we will have to consider carefully.”
