Mobile Scissor Lifts are used more than step ladders!

The news has recently broke announcing that a man who was working as a shop fitter at the new Westfield shopping centre located in Stratford City was seriously hurt after falling from a step ladder.  The shopping centre is now almost completely built and will be open to the public within just a few weeks.

The shop fitter was allegedly working at height within the space above a false ceiling of a sports shop when he fell. It has been reported that he suffered a broken back due to his fall, though this is yet to be confirmed.

The accident which took place a few days ago was reported to the Health and Safety Executive, but will not be investigated any further.  Most people when they are completing shop fitting work no longer use a step ladder due to the increased risks of falling- preferring to use mobile scissor lifts with their low level work platforms instead. This shift towards the use of these material handling solutions has been due to the high number of accidents which have been reported involving people using step ladders whilst working at height.

This incident, which if the reports are true could be extremely serious for the shop fitter. It’s believed that the decision to use the step ladder over a piece of materials handling equipment was down to the work being a last minute task. The unplanned job had to be completed with a degree of urgency and there was no time to bring in some safer, more appropriate equipment.
